Employee recognition is a fundamental need. Nothing beats being recognised at one’s workplace because of one’s effort and behaviour. It shows that one’s work is valued, and can encourage other employees to deliver.

The College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science (CAES) long service awards events on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses celebrated the achievements of its retirees and appreciated employees who have delivered outstanding service over the years. They were the first live celebrations since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sixteen employees were celebrated in Pietermaritzburg, including 12 with 15 years’ service, and two with 25 and 35 years, respectively. The event in Durban awarded 27 employees, including 14 that had served the University for 15 years, and three for 25 and 35 years, respectively.

Presided over by the Manager of the College Public Relations Office, Dr Sally Frost the events saw the College expressing its warmest goodbyes to retiring staff. The line managers of each awardee read their citations and traced their work journeys and the employees were presented with certificates and gifts of appreciation. The formalities were followed by refreshments and time for reminiscing and social interaction.

Ms Sibongile Ntuli, who received her 14-year award said: ‘I am honoured by this long service award and grateful to UKZN for providing me with opportunities for self-development. Since joining the University, I have obtained two qualifications, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and Master of Commerce in Human Resources.’

In his address, College Director of Professional Services Dr Dane Arumugam thanked the awardees, noting that ‘It is a huge honour to have had the opportunity to work with you.’ He thanked all those who made the events a success.
